Tracing / Traces: Architecture and the Archive 2020

Monica Chadha is the founder of Civic Projects Architecture. She leads all aspects of projects in the office and serves as the primary point of contact on projects. Prior to starting her firm, she served as founding director of Impact Detroit and led project teams at both Studio Gang and Ross Barney Architects. During that time, Monica was integral to the design of award-winning, civic scale buildings, such as the Champaign Public Library and the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Civil Engineering Building. Outside of Civic Projects, Monica has served as co-chair of the Sensible Growth Committee of the Metropolitan Planning Council, as a Strategic Consultant for Archeworks, and on the Board of the Delta Institute. She has been an Adjunct Professor at Illinois Institute of Technology 2007-17, engaging students in social impact design practices. She holds a Masters of Architecture from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a Bachelors of Environmental Studies in Architecture from the University of Waterloo, Canada.

Peter Exley is an architect, designer and advocate for interactive public environments, committed to construction of new paradigms in pedagogy, play and participatory experience. Hailing from Yorkshire, he arrived in Chicago for a year in 1985. He has been there ever since, and co-founded the design practice ArchitectureIsFun in 1994. He is an adjunct Professor of Architecture and Interior Architecture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the co-host of PechaKucha Night Chicago, winner of the 2012 Benjamin Moore HUE Award and the 2013 President of AIA Chicago.

Andres L. Hernandez is a Chicago-based artist, designer, and educator who re-imagines the environments we inhabit, and explores the potential of spaces for public dialogue and social action. Hernandez is co-founder of the Revival Arts Collective, founder and director of the Urban Vacancy Research Initiative, and exhibition design team member for the Museum of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, IL. He recently served as workshop faculty in the Graduate Studies in Art & Design Education program at Vermont College of Fine Arts, and Visiting Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Architecture; Urban Design at Washington University in St. Louis. Hernandez received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cornell University and a Master of Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he is currently Associate Professor of Art Education and Director of the Master of Arts in Art Education program.

Jayne Kelley is an editor and writer based in Chicago. She works mostly on books about architecture. She is currently clinical assistant professor and assistant director of events and publications at the UIC School of Architecture. Her projects there include the forthcoming book Now and Then. Previously, she worked at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), in Montreal, most recently as managing editor in the publications division. She is co-editor of American Framing (Park Books, 2021) and The Museum Is Not Enough (Sternberg Press / CCA, 2019) and co-author of The Western Town (Hatje Cantz, 2013). Her writing has appeared in Area, Clog, the Journal of Architectural Education, MAS Context, NESS, and Flat Out, where she is a member of the editorial board. Through her freelance practice, she has copy edited dozens of manuscripts and has collaborated in various ways with the Architect’s Newspaper, the CCA, M+, the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize, and several architecture, design, and law firms.

Francesco Marullo is an architect and educator. His research focuses on the relations between architecture, labor, and the space of production. He holds a PhD in the history and theory of architecture from the Delft University of Technology, and he is an assistant professor at the UIC School of Architecture in Chicago.
