Germane Barnes’s award winning research and design practice, Studio Barnes, investigates the connection between architecture and identity, examining architecture’s social and political agency through historical research and design speculation. Mining architecture’s social and political agency, he examines how the built environment influences black domesticity.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Germane Barnes received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Architecture from Woodbury University where he was awarded the Thesis Prize for his project Symbiotic Territories: Architectural Investigations of Race, Identity, and Community.
Currently he is an Assistant Professor and the Director of The Community Housing & Identity Lab (CHIL) at the University of Miami School of Architecture, a testing ground for the physical and theoretical investigations of architecture’s social and political resiliency. His work has been featured in international institutions most notably MoMA, Chicago Architecture Biennial, MAS Context, SFMOMA, LACMA, The Graham Foundation, The New York Times, Architect Magazine, DesignMIAMI/ Art Basel, Metropolis Magazine, Domus, Wallpaper* Magazine, and The National Museum of African American History where he was identified as one of the future designers on the rise.
Germane Barnes is the 2021 winner of the Wheelwright Prize by the Harvard Graduate School of Design, winner of the 2021 Architectural League Prize, a 2022 USA Architecture & Design fellow, and a 2021–22 Rome Prize Fellow at The American Academy in Rome.

About Concéntrico
Concéntrico is Logroño’s International Festival of Architecture and Design that proposes to reflect on the urban environment and the city. The latest edition, Concéntrico 07, was held from September 2 to September 5, 2021.
The Festival invites visitors to tour the city through installations, exhibitions, meetings, activities, and performances that create a connection between the venues, squares, streets, courtyards, and hidden spaces that usually go unnoticed in their daily lives.
Since 2015, the festival has brought together 91 urban installations created by teams of Spanish and international architects and designers who experiment with new fields of environmental design. In this way, a dialogue is established between the city, heritage, and contemporary architecture that activates citizens’ reflections on these spaces.
