Susan King is a Principal with HED. She is an architect, advocate, and Housing and Mixed-Use Sector Leader known for advancing place-based, mission-driven design. A Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and a recognized voice for social equity and sustainable development, Susan has spent her career bringing high-quality, thoughtful housing to underserved communities throughout the Midwest. Her design process is rooted in deep understanding of both the demographic being served and the client’s mission. Whether leading new construction or adaptive reuse, Susan balances affordability, sustainability, and community identity to create meaningful spaces for living and connection. She has led design for thousands of units of housing, from special needs to market-rate, always prioritizing both impact and dignity. A long-standing voice in national conversations around sustainable design, Susan formerly directed HED’s firmwide sustainability initiative and continues to champion environmental stewardship as essential to affordability and quality of life.
