Nocturnal Landscapes: Museo en la Calle

MAS Context and Clear Channel collaborated to exhibit Nocturnal Landscapes on Clear Channel’s digital displays in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Seville. This exhibition launched Clear Channel’s “Museo en la Calle” initiative with the goal of bringing art and culture to city streets.

The exhibition, curated by architect Iker Gil and that features work by architects Mar Santamaria and Pablo Martínez of the Barcelona-based firm 300.000 Km/s and Minneapolis-based sociologist and photographer David Schalliol, is already on display on the Clear Channel digital displays.

This exhibition focuses on five global cities: Barcelona, Chicago, Las Vegas, Tokyo, and Vancouver. Their urban rhythms are presented here through a series of cartographies and photographs. The exhibition takes the idea that nighttime is a unique territory to the streets of these Spanish cities.

This exhibition is part of the larger MAS Context initiative that explores nocturnal landscapes of global metropolises. The initiative started in 2019 and was first exhibited at the Instituto Cervantes of Chicago as a partner program of the Chicago Architecture Biennial. Since then, the project has continued through public lectures, interviews, and publications.

Mar Santamaría and Pablo Martínez operate 300.000 Km/s, a professional firm based in Barcelona that provides data analysis and consulting on cities. They apply technology to architecture, cities and land, searching for new ways to transform the environment. They work in the field of urban analysis, cartography, urban planning, digital tool development, and digital humanities. Their knowledge stems from architecture, urbanism, geographic data analysis, urban history, restoration, museology, industrial design, project management and software development. They provide data analysis services and data products to help cities make better decisions based on data. They have collaborated successfully with public entities, international companies, and cultural institutions.

David Schalliol

David Schalliol is an associate professor of sociology at St. Olaf College who is interested in the relationship between community, social structure, and place. He exhibits widely, including in the Chicago Architecture Biennial, the Centre Régional de la Photographie Hauts-de-France, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography. His work has been supported by institutions including the Graham Foundation and the European Union and featured in publications including MAS Context, The New York Times, and Social Science Research. David is the author of Isolated Building Studies (UTAKATADO) and co-author, with Michael Carriere, of The City Creative (The University of Chicago Press). He additionally contributes to such films as Almost There and Highrise: Out My Window, which won an International Digital Emmy for Non-Fiction. His directorial debut, The Area, premiered at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in 2018.

Iker Gil

Iker Gil is the founder of MAS Studio, Editor in Chief of the nonprofit MAS Context, and Executive Director of the SOM Foundation. Iker has edited or coedited several books including Radical Logic: On the Work of Ensamble Studio and Shanghai Transforming. He has curated multiple exhibitions including Nocturnal Landscapes, Poured Architecture: Sergio Prego on Miguel Fisac, and BOLD: Alternative Scenarios for Chicago, part of the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial. He was Associate Curator of the US Pavilion for the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale and cocurator of Exhibit Columbus 2020–2021. He has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), and Escola da Cidade (São Paulo).
