Koray Duman: Spaces of Generosity

Originally from Turkey, Koray Duman earned a B.Arch from Middle Eastern Technical University in Ankara and furthered his studies at UCLA’s Graduate School of Architecture where he completed an M.Arch. Between 1999 and 2005, he worked as the lead architect on several West Coast museum projects, before relocating to New York. In 2013, he established B-KD (Büro Koray Duman Architects), a research-driven architecture studio with a focus on Arts and Cultural Projects. The firm has designed and executed projects for MoMA PS1, the Finnish Cultural Institute NY, the Noguchi Museum, MOCA LA, and Guggenheim Bilbao among other cultural visionary and forward-thinking clients. Koray was the chair of the New Practice Committee at AIA NY, a board member of the Clemente Center, and a member of the Leadership Council at Van Alen Institute. He is currently a fellow of Urban Design Forum and on the executive council of Muslim American Heritage and ProtoCinema. In collaboration with these organizations, Koray invests in the social, cultural, and ecological challenges of our built environment and, in response, explores innovative strategies in architectural practice. He has taught at Pratt Graduate School of Architecture, The New School, and RPI. He is a registered architect in New York State and Turkey.

Ann Lui is an architect, principal of Future Firm, and Assistant Professor of Practice at the University of Michigan. Previously, she practiced at SOM, Ann Beha Architects, and Morphosis Architects. Ann was co-curator of the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2018 titled Dimensions of Citizenship. She co-edited Public Space? Lost and Found (MIT/SA+P Press, 2015) on critical and aesthetic practices in the civic realm. Ann was recently named Newcity’s “Designer of the Moment” (2018) and Crain’s “40 Under 40” (2018). She holds an SMArchS from MIT and a BArch from Cornell University, where she was awarded the Charles Goodwin Sands Medal and the Clifton Beckwith Brown Memorial Medal.
