Stanley Tigerman: Drawing on the Ineffable

Deborah Berke, FAIA, LEED AP is an architect, educator, and the founder of New York-based architecture firm TenBerke. Among the firm’s most significant works are the Residential Colleges at Princeton University, the Cummins Indy Distribution Headquarters, the Rockefeller Arts Center at SUNY Fredonia, the Yale School of Art in New Haven, Connecticut, and the 21c Museum Hotels across the South and Midwest. In 2017, TenBerke was honored with a National Design Award from the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Deborah is the J. M. Hoppin Professor and the Dean of the Yale School of Architecture, the first woman to hold the position. She has been a Professor at Yale since 1987.

Thomas Kelley was raised in Canberra, Berlin, Warsaw, Tegucigalpa, Oxford, Lima, and Washington D.C. Thomas is the recipient of the Peter Reyner Banham Fellowship from SUNY Buffalo and the Rome Prize in Architecture from the American Academy in Rome. He is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at the UIC School of Architecture and operates an architecture collaborative with Carrie Norman under the pseudonym Norman Kelley. The practice has been awarded the 2014 Young Architect’s Prize by the Architectural League of New York and their design work is currently represented by Volume Gallery in Chicago. Their recently designed Aesop boutique opened a few weeks ago in Wicker Park.

Margaret McCurry is a partner of Tigerman McCurry Architects and the recipient of Honor Awards from both the AIA National and Chicago Chapters as well as Interior Design Awards from IIDA and ASID. Her projects have been published widely in architectural and interior magazines and exhibited at museums and galleries in the US and abroad. She has lectured at design conferences, schools of architecture and taught design studios. The author of two monographs, Margaret McCurry: Constructing Twenty-Five Short Stories (The Monacelli Press, 2000) and Distillations: The Architecture of Margaret McCurry (ORO Editions, 2011), McCurry is former Chair of the National AIA Committee on Design and has been President of the Alumni Council of Harvard’s GSD, Director of the Alumni Association (HAA), and President of the Harvard Club of Chicago.

George Papamattheakis is the cofounder of ΣΟΔΑ cooperative for diploma projects on Athens (2016), cofounder of the Hellastock international construction workshop, which was part of the French Bellastock network (2014), and a former member of the European Architecture Students Assembly (2012). George has edited the book Stanley Tigerman: Drawing on the Ineffable (Yale University Press, 2025), and co-edited the books Islands After Tourism: Escaping the Monocultures of Leisure (kyklàda.press, 2023), The Beach Machine: Operating the Mediterranean Coastline (kyklàda.press, 2022), and Athens, misprinted: Toward a counter-paradigm (Futura, 2019). His research and writing has appeared in edited volumes and journals such as Architecture Research, Footprint, Log, CLOG, Šum Theory Journal, and CARTHA.

John Ronan is the founding principal of John Ronan Architects in Chicago, founded in 1999. He serves as Lead Designer on all projects the office undertakes and is known for his abstract yet sensuous work which explores materiality and atmosphere. His firm has been the recipient of three AIA Institute National Honor Awards—for the Poetry Foundation and The Gary Comer Youth Center, and the Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship at the Illinois Institute of Technology. John is currently the John & Jeanne Rowe Endowed Professor in Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
